Building legitimacy for Social Media consulting with corporate America has been a long and tough process. Agencies have had to first convince execs that social media has bottom-line value and secondly that the exec can feel comfortable having a third party speaking on behalf of the company in real time.
We, as agencies, have pretty much gotten past the first hurdle. Execs are starting to ‘get it’ and see the value of social media. The second hurdle has been more difficult and has had a number of consultants tripping over themselves, trying to navigate their client’s corporate structure to get a tweet or post approved.
Well thanks to New Media Strategies (NMS), Chrysler’s now-former agency, our efforts to gain corporate trust may have just been set back a bit.
Apparently, the tweet was immediately removed and the NMS employee was swiftly fired. The next day, NMS was fired.
Ugh. Hopefully this doesn’t make things too much more difficult for the rest of us. What do you think?
