Updated Hotstar stats for 2026: Disney+ Hotstar reached 35.9M paid subs (Sept 2024) before merging with JioCinema to launch JioHotstar (Feb 14, 2025). Includes 200M+ JioHotstar subs, 400M+ digital users, 400M downloads, and major cricket concurrency records.
Hotstar launched in India in 2015 and quickly became one of the country’s most important streaming platforms—especially for cricket. In 2020, the service was rebranded as Disney+ Hotstar after Disney integrated its global Disney+ content library into the Hotstar experience.
Major update: In India, Disney+ Hotstar is no longer a standalone Disney-operated streaming app. In February 2025, Disney+ Hotstar and JioCinema merged to form “JioHotstar” under JioStar, the Reliance–Disney joint venture.
Answer box: Disney+ Hotstar reported 35.9 million paid subscribers as of the quarter ended Sept. 28, 2024. The service then merged with JioCinema and launched JioHotstar on Feb. 14, 2025. Post-merger reporting has cited 200M+ subscribers (Reuters, Dec 2025) and ~400M digital users across JioStar’s streaming footprint (Variety, Dec 2025). Historically, Hotstar passed 400M app downloads in 2019 and hit 19M concurrent viewers for a major cricket match in 2019.

Hotstar “stats” have to be read carefully because the brand and ownership changed in India. The table below separates Disney+ Hotstar (pre-merger) from JioHotstar (post-merger) and labels each figure by year.
| Metric | Value | Year / Period | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Disney+ Hotstar paid subscribers | 35.9M | Quarter ended Sept 28, 2024 | Moneycontrol |
| Merger: Disney+ Hotstar + JioCinema | JioHotstar launch | Feb 14, 2025 | Variety / India Today |
| JioHotstar subscribers | 200M+ subscribers | Dec 2025 (reported) | Reuters |
| JioStar digital user reach | ~400M digital users | Dec 2025 (reported) | Variety |
| Content at JioHotstar launch | ~300,000 hours of content | Feb 2025 (claimed) | Variety |
| App downloads | 400M downloads | 2019 | Deadline |
| Record concurrent viewership | 19M concurrent viewers (India vs New Zealand) | Jul 2019 | Moneycontrol |
If you see “Hotstar user count” stats after February 2025, many of them actually refer to JioHotstar (the merged product of Disney+ Hotstar + JioCinema). That’s why you’ll see newer numbers reported as “JioHotstar subscribers” or “JioStar digital users.”
Hotstar’s biggest public scale moments historically came from live cricket. In July 2019, the platform hit 19M concurrent viewers for a World Cup semifinal. That “live concurrency” story continues under JioHotstar, with big events used to drive subscriber additions and attention.
Streaming platforms often cite different denominators: subscribers (paying or bundled) vs monthly users/digital reach. For example, Reuters reported subscribers (200M+), while Variety reported broader digital users (~400M). Both can be true because they measure different things.
As a historical Disney-era benchmark, Disney+ Hotstar reported 35.9M paid subscribers for the quarter ended Sept. 28, 2024. After the merger, Reuters reported JioHotstar had 200M+ subscribers (Dec 2025).
Hotstar was rebranded as Disney+ Hotstar in 2020 to include Disney+ content. In India, Disney+ Hotstar later merged with JioCinema to form JioHotstar in February 2025.
JioHotstar launched on Feb. 14, 2025, after Disney+ Hotstar and JioCinema merged under JioStar.
Hotstar crossed 400M downloads in 2019 (reported at the time). Downloads are a lifetime install metric and do not equal active users.
One widely cited record is 19M concurrent viewers for India vs New Zealand during the 2019 Cricket World Cup (reported by Moneycontrol).
