aol Statistics user count and FactsAOL (America Online) is a historic American internet services and media company that played a pivotal role in the early development and popularization of the internet. Founded in 1985 as Quantum Computer Services, it later became AOL in 1991. AOL was headquartered in New York City.

During the 1990s and early 2000s, AOL was known for its dial-up internet services, providing millions of users with access to email, chat rooms, instant messaging, and a wide range of online content. The company’s “You’ve Got Mail” notification became an iconic soundbite associated with the era.

AOL also ventured into content creation and media, acquiring notable brands like Time Warner in 2000, forming AOL Time Warner, in what is often considered one of the most significant and ill-fated mergers in corporate history. Subsequently, AOL divested itself from Time Warner in 2009.

As the internet landscape evolved, AOL transitioned to become a media and advertising company, providing digital content and advertising solutions. In recent years, AOL has been part of the Verizon Media Group, which includes brands like Yahoo and HuffPost.

While no longer as dominant as it once was, AOL remains a symbol of the early internet and its influence on the way people connect, communicate, and access information online.
