Danone is a French multinational food-products corporation, specializing in dairy products, plant-based foods, and bottled water. It is one of the world’s leading producers of fresh dairy products, including yogurt, and has a presence in over 120 countries.
The company was founded in Barcelona, Spain in 1919 by Isaac Carasso, a Greek pharmacist who developed a yogurt-based product to help treat digestive disorders. Carasso named the product after his son, Daniel, and called it “Danone” (which means “little Daniel” in Catalan). The company grew quickly, expanding into France in the 1920s and other countries in the following decades. In the 1960s, Danone began diversifying into other food and beverage products, including bottled water and baby food. Today, the company’s products range from dairy and plant-based alternatives to yogurt, to bottled water, and specialized nutrition products. Danone is committed to sustainability and has set ambitious targets for reducing its carbon footprint and promoting regenerative agriculture.
