In wake of the horrific attacks a few hours ago in Brussels, no doubt some Facebook users will be looking for ways to show their solidarity with the people of Belgium. Here is a quick and easy way to add a Black, Yellow and Red Belgium flag overlay filter to your Facebook profile picture:

  3. Click the Facebook sign in button

  5. Once the app is done working, you will see your profile image with the Belgium flag overlay. Right click on this image and save it to your computer or device
  6. Go to you Facebook profile and hover over your profile pic and select “update profile picture”
  7. Upload the new profile pic as you normally would and edit as you wish then save it

Update 12/5/15:

I have gotten a bunch of messages over the past couple of days asking if I knew of a way to add an American flag to a Facebook profile picture to show support for San Bernardino. I did a little snooping around and I didn’t find an official Facebook overlay, but here is a third-party app that adds a #PrayforUSA red, white and blue overlay to your Facebook profile picture. It seems to be gaining quite a bit of momentum. It is just sad that this is becoming such a common thing these days…

Update 11/14/15:

This post originally was intended to instruct people on how to celebrate the American 4th of July on Facebook, but I am seeing a huge spike in traffic with people looking for a way to show their support for and solidarity with the people of Paris. Here is how can change your profile picture to red, white and blue:

  1. Click on the “Try It” button in this official Facebook post
  2. In the pop-up, you can select the duration of the overlay
  3. Once the pic looks as you want it, click “Use as Profile Picture”

Update 7/4/11:

The effort to turn Facebook profile pictures Red, White and Blue for Flag Day proved marginally successful. It seems that the organizers are giving it another go for the 4th of July.

Original Post 6/13/11:

One of my favorite, must-read daily blogs, All Facebook, tells us about an effort to get Americans to show their patriotism on Facebook for Flag Day (tomorrow, June 14th).

They are asking Facebookers to snag a flag photo from the special Page they setup for the day and use it as their profile picture.

So far, they have close to 6,000 likes on their page. It will be interesting to see how widespread this effort becomes tomorrow.
