Here is my running list of how many people use music streaming services. Updated for August 2018 (the best I could find, at least).
Little has demonstrated the evolution of technology more than the way in which music has been delivered to us. From records to 8tracks to cassette tapes to CDs to MP3s to music streaming, as technology has matured, so too has the music industry (whether they liked it or not).MP3 players and iPods have been replaced by ad-supported and fremium music streaming services that users can access from just about any of the many digital devices in their life.
There are a bunch of music streaming services in existence. No doubt, there will be quite a bit of attrition and consolidation in this space as many of them struggle to turn a profit in spite of large operating costs.
So how many people are using these services? I wondered that recently, so I decided to carve out a subset of my big list of 1000+ services and their user totals to see who has what. The results are pretty impressive. Here are a few of the more notable music streaming services around and how many people are using each. Enjoy!
How Many People Use Music Streaming Services?
- Apple Music: 17 million subscribers Last updated 9/7/16
- iHeartRadio: 110 million registered users Last updated 1/8/18
- Pandora: 78 million active users Last updated 3/24/18
- Soundcloud: 200 million monthly users Last updated 9/29/16
- SoundHound: 260 million users Last updated 11/20/15
- Spotify: 170 million active users Last updated 2/28/18
Please note that some of these numbers are easier to find than others, so some of these are based on news reports and not official company tallies. All stats are linked to their source unless it was sent to me directly from the company. It is also difficult, at times, to distinguish monthly social media users from total user accounts for many social media. In other words: This is the best I can find, but I don’t guarantee anything.
