In 2011, Guinness was a trailblazer in digital marketing by utilizing augmented reality approximately seven months before it became cool to do so. They created a 3D “virtual pint” that you could produce after printing a “beer mat” AR marker and pointing your webcam at it.

I had big hopes for Guinness this St Patrick’s Day, but sadly, this year’s entry is much, much less creative.
For 2012, Guinness is going for a record for the world’s biggest party. To do so, the Irish brewer is asking its Facebook friends to use its app and pledge to celebrate St Patrick’s Day with them. That’s pretty much all there is to the app.
The pledge app displays a ticker that counts up the number of pledges made. Once you pledge, you can share with your friends that you pledged and/or you can sign up for a Guinness newsletter. You can also download and print up an official certificate of participation from the app (on which you will have to write your name on an actual dotted line).
Strangely, you have to authorize the app twice and enter a captcha to make a pledge. No doubt, this is due to the fact that there are Facebook users under the legal drinking age, but still a bit much.
Try it out. I’d love to hear what you all think about the app. Maybe I am missing something. It certainly wouldn’t be the first time….
